European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
